At 11:30 pm
on October 11, 1975, a ragtag group of young comedians and writers changed television forever. Find out what happened behind the scenes in the 90 minutes before Saturday Night Live (1975) first aired. Matt Wood plays John Belushi on Saturday Night, watch the rest of the cast and their real-life co-stars… Dan Aykroyd was the only original SNL cast member to read the script.
He actually immediately announces
As the show goes live, John Belushi enters the frame 39 seconds late through the door. Lorne Michaels: Look, my name is Lorne Michaels, I’m the producer of “Saturday Night.” Doorman: All night? Lorne Michaels: [sarcastically] Yeah, all night… The film opens with a quote from Lorne Michaels: “The show doesn’t go on because it’s ready, it goes on because it’s 11:30.” Featured in Eddie Murphy: The Black King of Hollywood (2023).

Now, to set the stage for my review, I am not a fan of Saturday Night Live, but I don’t hate the show either. I have seen clips of this show on YouTube, there were stars of this show who went on to greater things in their careers, and I have only watched one episode and that episode was hosted by Sydney Sweeney. Other than that, this is a series that has never held my attention and I am not a big fan of sketch comedies. However, when I heard that Jason Reitman was directing a movie based on the events that occurred before the premiere of this series, I naturally decided to give it a shot and I had a blast with Saturday Night (2024).
And lastly, the movie did a fantastic job of making this set piece chaotic
Positive things about Saturday Night 2024): This movie was a chaotic rollercoaster from start to finish. This movie has a wild pace that demands you to pay attention and for the most part, it succeeds. The actors do a fantastic job portraying these 70s people and while it was a little confusing to watch some of them play certain characters from that show, they all did a great job in their roles. The comedy in this movie is very funny and some of the skits they performed made me laugh.
Cons of Saturday Night (2024): The movie is a little too chaotic for me
There are some conflicts that feel rushed to be resolved without proper preparation. And lastly, the movie is so fast-paced that at times I couldn’t follow it. Overall, Saturday Night (2024) is a fun experience from start to finish and if you’re a fan of this series, I highly recommend this movie.
