Director Fede Alvarez sought out the special effects team from Alien 2 (1986) to work on the creatures

While delving into the depths of an abandoned space station, a group of young space colonists come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe. ‘Alien: Romulus’ stars Cailee Spaeny and Isabela Merced reveal why director Fede Alvarez used practical effects and animatronic xenomorphs to terrify his cast. Physical sets, practical creatures, and miniatures were used wherever possible to help ground the later visual effects work. When Rain turns off the ship’s gravity and shoots all the aliens, all their blood is suspended in the air in long, smeared patterns. Zero gravity in real life causes liquids to take on spherical shapes, not spread out in long, flat pieces like in the movie.

Andy: The solution for a claustrophobic astronaut is to give him more space. The 20th Century Studios fanfare freezes and turns ominous, much like in Alien 3 (1992), leading into the film’s opening scene. The logo itself suffers a static explosion and turns green. Monster gets loose and starts killing everyone
My first takeaway was that there was just nothing there to get emotionally invested in, either in the story or the characters. The characters just seemed like cardboard cutouts, with no story arcs to them, no real emotional content to connect with. The story was pretty much a recycling of the previous Alien films. As a result, there was no dramatic buildup or tension. You pretty much know exactly how it’s all going to play out, shortly after you’re introduced to the characters and the situation.
The “space” ones, that is
Oh, and let’s add a little disdain for how evil the corporations are, just for flavor. Which, because of how it was done, came off more as nonsense than anything to connect with. The only redeeming feature of the movie was the special effects. The creature effects were more than what’s been seen in all the previous movies. But they did a really good job with the physics in the space shots.
But that was it
They were really fun to watch. Nothing new, nothing to surprise anyone. Just another “Alien” movie, one for everyone. Boring… The final season of “What We Do in the Shadows” is one of the biggest TV and streaming premieres this month. Check out our October schedule for more!
